Winners from the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards (Drama & Film)

Often referred to as the ‘Oscars of Korea’, the Baeksang Arts Awards is the only comprehensive awards ceremony in Korea which recognizes excellence in the categories of film, television and theatre.

The 57th Baeksang Arts Awards ceremony took place on May 13, 2021 at the Korean International Exhibition Centre, presented by TikTok and broadcasted by jTBC. Below, you will find the winners of the prestigious awards in the Drama and Film categories.

Drama

Beyond Evil takes home the Best Drama Award, Best Screenplay Award as well as Best Actor Award for the role of Lee Dong Sik, played by Shin Ha Kyun.

Thoughts: I was especially nervous for the Best Actor category because each nominee’s (Shin Ha Kyun, Lee Jun Ki, Kim Soo Hyun, Eom Ki Joon and Song Joong Ki) performance was almost equally incredible in comparison to the other. However, I will say that if I absolutely had to choose, I would’ve also gone for Shin Ha Kyun’s performance as Lee Dong Sik in Beyond Evil. Although I was hoping for My Unfamiliar Family to take Best Screenplay, I am overall satisfied with the results here especially Kim So Yeon’s Best Actress win for The Penthouse: War in Life.

Film

Samjin Group Company English Class takes the Best Film Award home at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Samjin Group Company English Class takes the Best Film Award home at the 57th Baeksang Arts Awards.

Thoughts: The film category was truly a battle between Voice of Silence and Moving On - and rightfully so. I think both films were very well-done and deserve all the praise. It was very appropriate to give Yoon Dan Bi the Best New Director and Hong Ui Jeong Best Director because they both did an immense job in their respective films. On the case of The Book of Fish, it’s still a relatively new film so I wasn’t able to watch it ahead of the awards ceremony. Even more so now that the Daesang was given to it, I can’t wait until I can watch it given the fact that it’s a black and white film - the trailer alone looks spectacular.
